Against the Grain is a short story about a family, the bond between a father and his son, and about that son, Sam, learning how to become a man (14 pages/ 10 minutes/ 1-2 days shooting)


Characters:

Sam Hutchinson - 12-15 year old boy, nice kid, smart, well liked, plays on the soccer team, medium build, athletic, good looking.

Jeremy Hutchinson - late 30's or 40's, cooler, attractive, father trying to raise a family and be a good example to his son. Orlando Bloom, Owen Wilson, Ryan Reynolds type

Stephanie Hutchinson - late 30's or 40's, mother. Attractive, a commanding presence but very loving. She loves Jeremy very much but is upset with him (and Sam) in this story so that needs to come through; just because you're upset at your husband doesn't mean you don't love them still. Rachel Weisz, a younger Sandra Bullock type

Daryll Smalls - 11-15, small, nervous, shy and under-developed, gets made fun of a lot but never fights back.

Levi Wagner - 15, tough kid, been in plenty of fights, plays football, bigger guy, maybe not the brightest

We're also casting for about 30 extras - middle school kids. Feel free to send headshots and contact info, there's about 5 different speaking roles (1 line each) and a lot of face time for these extras, however there is some cursing. So, please only submit if you feel comfortably with your son or daughter swearing or at least being around swearing (only the speaking roles have swearing) The scene is a middle school fight with no teachers around.

This short film is being made specifically to be submitted to festivals this spring (for showing next fall). I apologize there's no pay, but IMDB credit and festival exposure is a guarantee. There's a lot of great young talent on this short including an amazing DP and producer, and a brilliant composer. If you're looking for something very subtle and dramatic. then please submit for auditions. I promise you won't regret it.
