Los Angeles – Monday January 7th, 2008
AIDA
Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts
Welcome to AIDA
freeclass@aidaacting.com

is back with a free “ON CAMERA” acting class ……..
This time with two internationally acclaimed teachers:
Paul J Parker & Antoinette Byron.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT AIDA……

Vaughn Hart say’s; “For over 25 years I was a theatrical agent, the last 16 running my own agency, Vaughn D. Hart & Associates. I have seen the immediate results from his techniques and watched the students grow in their acting talent and see them achieve success by booking work in this ever more difficult business. Though there are many people teaching in LA, Paul brings a different approach to this business, one that engages the actor and instills within something that seems to resonate and tap into one’s ability to really learn the art of acting. I highly recommend that you take a hard look at AIDA and consider if you are ready to move ahead with your career by stepping outside your comfort zone and learning a new way to improve your acting skills”. Vaughn Hart Formally Vaughn D. Hart & Associates

Rod Baron says; “I am the president of Baron Entertainment, a Commercial and Theatrical Talent Agency Paul has worked with a number of our clients and improved their work. Paul is an acting coach of the highest standard. A qualified teacher with a Drama and English teaching degree, Paul has been teaching actors for 17 years. The most impressive thing about Paul J Parker as an acting coach is he gets results. Paul’s ability to tap into an actors psyche and subtly challenge them and push their boundaries to improve their skills and their overall work is first class. Paul kindly draws actors’ attention to areas where they can improve and grow. He also knows many techniques; including Australian acting techniques that are of the highest quality. I cannot recommend Paul more highly as an acting coach for professional high profile actors. Yours Sincerely, Rod Baron President Baron Entertainment”.

Jeffrey R. Gund says; As founder and CEO of INFOLIST.com, I have referred literally hundreds of actors to Paul Parker's class at the Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts. The reason I continue to send everyone I know his way is that virtually everyone, without exception, has had nothing but great things to say about his classes - from the actual content of the classes, the quality and care put in by the teachers, and the warm, nurturing environment created not only by the teachers, but the other students as well. I have literally never heard a single negative comment from the many, many students I have referred to him. So when I give Paul my highest recommendation, it's not just me, it's multiplied by a factor of hundreds!”

EXPERIENCED ACTOR Rebecca Brooks SAY’S; “Paul Parker is an extraordinary teacher and a very kind person, as well. I have studied with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler and Paul is the best teacher I have ever had”.

Beau Berglund say’s “I want to thank you for your advice and honesty, what impressed me the most about you is that I can tell that you are definitely getting to the point, and not needlessly dragging actors in their training...although it is a complement to you, it is in my opinion, unfortunately the norm with acting teachers, and schools in LA that they often times "beat around the bush" with their students, and don't give them information that gets them the job ASAP...I can honestly say that I benefited from your classes in this way....I learned 1,2,3,4,5, or least 6 usable tools from you in just two classes and I'm sure there is at least 2 or 3 more that I am forgetting.....Hands down, ...your class is the most efficient class I've seen, and I've audited, Ivana Chubbick, Playhouse West, The Promenade Conservatory, Tom Todoroff Studio, Studio Actreel, The Lee Strasberg Institute, and I've studied at the Alan Feinstein studio, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (summer program)”.

AIDA - Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts acting school is in Hollywood in Los Angeles, Manhattan in New York . AIDA began teaching in June of 2002. Bookings have occurred on both coasts from the Mark Taper Forum in theatre, to leads in feature films shooting in America and abroad, to guest stars and series regulars on television to national and regional commercials.

Children and Auditions

Older actors generally have had some training. They have taken drama or theatre in school, at the very least, or perhaps have done some local theatre plays. They may have attended acting classes and workshops. They possibly have been to auditions and experienced first hand. For children, however, the first audition can easily be a new experience. This experience can be scary for both the child and the parent if they have never done this before and especially if they have not had some basic audition training.

Children (anyone under 18, for that matter) have an advantage in some ways because they often have both an Agent and a Manager. I'm not referring to a professional Manager who is trained, experienced, and skilled in the business. Rather, I am referring to the parents themselves.

In Texas, as well as in many other states, a Manager must be licensed and bonded through the state. Anyone acting as a manager must have these credentials or they are breaking the law. Confusion is often the result of people playing Manager, in fact, because they do not understand what a Manager actually is. A real "Manager," by professional definition, is not someone who finds work for their client (the person they are managing). In fact, one of the jobs of a Manager is to secure proper agency representation for their client - and then the Agency finds that person work. Managers do not book work for their clients, though they may make introductions that lead to working situations. A real Manager is someone who advises their client, the talent, and helps guide their career. By definition, at least in Texas, a person acting as a Manager must have a Talent Agency license. This would apply to any person or persons who "advise" or "guide" models or actors and helps them make decisions.

A Manager is like a "mommy" for their client and helps with things such as, but not limited to: making introductions, securing an agent, reviewing job offers and scripts, helping with legal and financial issues (themselves, or by hiring lawyers and accountants). A good Manager holds their client's hand, makes sure they get to auditions and appointments, takes the blame for mistakes, helps select proper photo images, invests financially when necessary, drives their client to and from when transportation issues arise, helps point out strengths and weaknesses, builds road maps for obtaining goals, tracks the meeting of achievements, deals directly with press and public relation issues, hires PR firms when necessary, and basically babies their client while helping build them into a successful talent and star.

A clause, again at least in Texas, to the Manager licensing requirement is that a parent may act as Manager for their minor child. This means that a mother or father, or a legal guardian, may perform all of the above for their child without having to obtain a license. Moms and dads, this means you can AND SHOULD be managing your child's career.

Going to an audition, in this above styled situation (parent as Manager), is not an issue. A parent always accompanies a minor to an audition or a job - if not because it is required, then definitely because a parent should be present with their child for anything like this. This article does not cover the "how to" for attending an audition, but does cover how a parent and child should act and react in an audition situation.

An adult age 18 or older should attend auditions and jobs alone and without a parent there holding their hand. This refers to attending something that is professional and legitimate. While TFP model photo shoots can be both professional and legitimate, it is always recommended, at least first time out with someone new, to take someone along with you. This person coming with you should ensure, however, that they are quiet and that they stay out of the way. The chaperone situation can be argued by photographers, but a truly professional shooting TFP should have nothing to hide or fear by someone coming along. If they do, then that is a caution sign for the model/actor and should be observed carefully when making a decision to shoot or not.

When an adult attends an audition, they should do so by themselves. It's okay to have someone drive you, but they should wait for you outside. When a minor child attends an audition, a parent or guardian should accompany them. This parent, however, should understand that they are there, even as Manager for their child, to "be seen and not heard." Introducing your child is fine, but let the child answer all the questions unless you are asked specifically. During the actual audition itself you may be asked to wait within another room. This is normal and generally is acceptable. A parent present can either throw a child off and hurt their actions and responses, or it can demonstrate that they must have someone there holding their hand and cannot perform independently, take direction, and perform properly for the director, photographer, or whomever the job will be with if they should land it.

Nobody wants their child to go into another room with closed doors with a stranger. You can best determine if this is something you accept based upon the size and reputation of whomever your child is auditioning with. If it is with a casting director with suitable credits, then consider your level of trust. If it is a student film, you may wish to be more cautious. This is not to say an issue cannot arise from anybody, but proper decision making should always be based upon reputations and research performed in advance. If you are sent by your agent, you can have a higher level of overall confidence than if you are responding, for instance, to a Craig's List ad.

Enter the room with your child when they are asked to come in to actually do their audition. Ask nicely if they prefer you to wait in another room. They'll tell you what they are expecting and might be perfectly happy having you there. If they do not want you present, wait quietly outside. If you are in the same room during, sit quietly in the back or in a corner and do not ask questions, talk, comment, or prompt your child to do this or that. Perhaps bring a book along and read while you are waiting.

After your child is finished, stand up and thank them for their time. Instruct your child in advance to thank them also. Leave quietly and wait to hear back. Do not call and ask, "Did you make any decisions yet?" If you have specific questions after, ask your agent... not the casting people.

Report back to your agency and let them know how things went. As a parent Manager, discuss the audition with your child. Talk about the positive things, and then discuss also those areas which could be improved. Like any real Manager, make sure you encourage your child and help them move on to be ready for the next and next opportunity.

My son looks very much like the little boy in the movie "Big Daddy". He is a very colorful child and is always putting on a show for the family and our guests. I have been modeling for a while and never considered putting my child in it until a friend suggested he do commercials or modeling. Does anyone know how to go about this safely? I don't want some psycho trying to lure me and my son into something dangerous. It's easier as an adult to screen out the weirdos (but never completely!) so how can I get my son out there without putting him in danger? Any help would be great!!!
Thanks!!

LANDING THE FISH

Let's assume the fishing for representation is over. You've got a
bite and someone wants to interview you -- an agent, manager, or
casting director. The dreaded interview looms. What do you do? How
do you not blow it?

The following examples, positive and negative, are taken from real
interviews.

Let's start with your appearance. It's important to note that, like
in an audition, decisions are often made before you even say a
word. Appearance, along with attitude, helps create that
instantaneous impression.

Packaging is everything in our profession, whether it's for an
audition or an interview. In fact, it helps to think of an
interview as an audition, requiring a monologue and Presence,
Poise, Preparation, and Packaging.

If you need a refresher on these four P's, hire a savvy coach for
an hour, one who is out there with you in the real
acting/interviewing world.

HOW TO BLOW THE INTERVIEW: APPEARANCE
Dress in ragged or dirty tee shirt and jeans (male or female),
sneakers, hair hanging apparently unwashed, no makeup (female),
unshaved (male). "Hey, Mr./Ms. Agent or Manager or Director, take
me, warts and all, just the way I am when I spackle the bathroom or
work in the sewer." (Please don't do this.)

TO GET WHAT YOU WANT: APPEARANCE

Dress as if interviewing for a job with a major corporation who
plans to promote you into the high six-figure bracket in 18 months.

CLOTHES

Females - Skirt (medium modest length), blouse or sweater with no
cleavage, medium pumps, hose, nice makeup (not glamorous unless you
are traffic stopping gorgeous), hair pulled back so that your face
can be seen. No perfume. (Exception, if you are a dancer wearing
the mini-est of skirts is fine, or the tightest of pants - just not
jeans).

Males - Sports jacket, shirt, slacks (cleaned and pressed), tie is
optional. Even if you are "street punk," let that be determined by
your face and voice, not by dirty clothes, clunky boots or
sneakers. Be shaven, washed and with combed hair (again, unless
street punk or prison inmate type). No cologne or shaving lotion.

TO BLOW THE INTERVIEW: PICTURES AND RESUME

1. Arrive with no picture or resume. Be sure to give a long
rambling excuse, including that you were in a hurry and forgot.

2. Arrive with outdated picture/resume.

3. Be sure the resume is untrimmed, sticking out past the headshot.
When asked why it is untrimmed, mumble that you didn't have time to
go to a copy shop and have it professionally cut.

4. Be sure to have a glamorous headshot that doesn't look the least
bit like "natural" you. (See past articles on headshots that match
you.)

NOTE: Many of the NY TV shows call with a same day audition for the
small roles. What to do? Have audition clothes, pictures and resume
always ready.

TO GET WHAT YOU WANT: PICTURES AND RESUME

1. Have five P/Rs with neatly trimmed edges.

2. Hand the agent your comp card if he/she handles print work. Have
it easily available so you don't take three minutes fishing in a
bag big enough to carry most of your worldly goods.

Although it's a bit late for this interview, please be sure your
headshot reflects your type. "Real" is in, big! Sexy will always
sell but friend-next-door or character actor is much more in
demand. Unless you are truly stunning, go for "real."

TO BLOW THE INTERVIEW: FALSE CLAIMS & LACK OF PREPARATION
1. Your resume says you sing (musical theatre). Get to the
interview and say:
A. "Oh, you know, like, uh, I can carry a tune."
B. "I don't have this memorized but I love it so much I'd like
to sing it anyway." (Yes, this is a verbatim quote from a recent
interview.)
C. "I sing with a band." (Irrelevant to agent who handles
musical theatre.)

2. Your resume says you dance (musical theatre). Get to the
interview and say "Well, I took tap in junior high but I've been
meaning to take another dance class soon."

3. Your resume says you were on "Law & Order," "The Sopranos," and
four studio films. Get to the interview and "Well, yes, they were
all extra jobs but you could see me clearly in one shot."

TO GET WHAT YOU WANT: PREPARATION
1. Often an agent or manager will ask for a monologue. Have three
or four ready at your fingertips. Have them so thoroughly prepared
that you can go on automatic pilot, if necessary. Do not stop,
fumble, smile sheepishly, or apologize if you forget your lines.
Cover your errors.

And since this may be in an office it would be preferable to select
a monologue that doesn't have yelling or screaming in it. Also most
agents, etc. prefer monologues without obscenities.

2. Have three songs memorized if you are presenting yourself as a
singer. Have your music with you. Many theatre companies have
"invited" general auditions. If yours is for a musical, take
several songs with you and have them all ready to perform perfectly.

3. Do not claim anything on your resume that is not true. Do not
try to pass off extra work as a featured role.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS

Interviews are often just "talk," unless they are a kind of invited
general audition which is combined with a brief interview. It's a
good idea to run several mock interviews with fellow actors who
have been through the experience. Sometimes it pays to see a coach
for an hour's work on interview techniques. Just be sure the coach
has also been out there recently interviewing, now--not 20 years
ago.

Interviews are conducted by the interviewer. Follow their lead. Do
not babble. (I once lost the film role of a lifetime because of
prattling with a director who had just arrived from London. I was
too excited chatting about London to realize the poor man was
exhausted, too thrilled to understand that I had more or less
already been cast and all he wanted to do was see me to confirm the
American casting director's advice.) Have all your antennae working
during an interview.

And the flip side of babbling is to sit like a mute, mumbling yes
and no. I cannot begin to mention all the topics discussed during
some major interviews, but here is a mini-list:

1. "What was it like working with XYZ (a fairly well known
actor/director)?" I adored him, thank you, and had a charming story
to tell about a book he and I both enjoyed. (Discovered that bit of
info from reading an Internet interview with him.) And yes, indeed,
I do know and do love the book.

2. "What do you think are your duties regarding XYZ (a super
international star in a Broadway production with a cast of only
three women)?" I hadn't a clue how to answer that one.

3. "What was it like playing a lesbian?" (My first professional
role in NY in a smash two-woman show). I loved the role, a famous
backwoods trailer trash international photographer.

I talked about how I landed the role. (It was an amusing story,
involving patting the brick wall where the imaginary picture was
hung. The director told me that action swung the casting decision.)

5. "How would you define yourself?" (I was speechless, from having
spent 20 years teaching literature and contemplating human nature.
I was too new to the profession to realize the agent was simply
asking about my "type," not about the nature of humanity. Not one
of my finer moments!)

MORAL OF THESE EXAMPLES? Be ready for almost any topic during an
interview. Think quickly and be diplomatic without being insincere.
Be open. Never chatter about your philandering boyfriend or double
crossing girlfriend or anything negative. Most important, never
complain or bad mouth people you've worked with past.

Do not discuss politics or religion.

Have a mini monologue prepared called "Myself," full of short
amusing stories and be flexible enough to ad lib constantly
throughout that biographical monologue.

Thankfully, most interviews are rather boring, polite and short.
They just want to get a sense of whether you are marketable and
whether you will be pleasant to work with.

In conclusion, here are a few general pointers for interviews:

* Good manners are noted and appreciated.

* Sitting in a chair properly shows respect.

* Being organized creates a great impression.

* Chewing gum also creates an impression, but not the kind you want
to make!

* Take your conversation cue from the agent. Formal? Breezy? Cool?
Professionally distant?

* Be on time, no more than five minutes early and not one minute
late.

* Do not have a snit because you are kept waiting. Agents are busy
and have constant demands from casting offices who have
emergencies. It is not an insult to you personally.

* Keep the snit under control if you are constantly interrupted by
the telephone. Be gracious. And remember charm goes a long way!

An obvious but necessary comment: If you are called in for an
interview it is because they are interested in you. Something about
your resume or looks or performance caught their attention.

Create an interviewing persona whose major trait is charm. Make
your interview the pleasant highlight of their day. They will
remember that and you will achieve your goal: an agent, a manager,
or a role.
