I drove 3 hours and spent 40 dollars going to a seminar for Image 1 Model and Talent Agency. At the seminar they demanded over $2000 for you to model for them. They kept saying; "You don't have to pay any more than this 40 dollars but if you pay 2000 for pictures and modeling classes and etc etc. it will make you more marketable." I didn't pay that because I knew it was probably a scam to begin with since it was 40 bucks.

They NEVER called me back. When I called them up they demanded I spend more money on classes etc and they claimed thats why I never got jobs.

Real models are 5'7 skinny and attractive. They work for Ford, Elite, and Next.

The idea of a talent agency where all ages, sizes and shapes are welcome is bull. This is a scam. If you are tall enough, make an appointment with Ford, Elite or Next model agency. These are legitimate. If you aren't tall enough, like me, you need to give it up.You aren't going to be a model and thats life. I'm currently going to school for cosmetology because thats what I think is fun and its the closest I'll get to becoming a model. <3

I would like to shed some light on a photographer (Tom Boyce of Boyce Photography) I worked with when I was 16, (3 years ago.) I don't want others to get hurt so I want everyone to know what happened to me.

I got to his studio in wisconsin with my mom. His studio was at his work in a backroom with very nice photography equipment. He gave a LONG speech about how you should always go to photoshoots with someone else. He also talked a lot about how he took pictures of his daughter who was around 16 at the time, in a strapless dress and how that made him very uncomfortable. He talked about that for a very long time. On his profile on OneModelPlace, he labeled these pictures of his daughter in a strapless dress, "Glamor" pictures. They were no such thing. Glamor pictures in modeling means provocative, sexy Rated R but not full nudity. My mother and I thought it was all really weird. At one point I dressed into a shirt that exposed my bra scraps and he told me it made him uncomfortable and he was going to edit them out.

So next I took my pictures, everything was great. He kept me laughing. I had a good time.

He told me he would retouch them with photoshop because he is so good with photoshop. He promised to send me 200 pictures on a cd.

He sent me 5 pictures through email that were HEAVILY photoshoped. I showed these pictures to a lot of people and we all concluded these pictures looked disturbing, sick and creepy. He called me asking if I liked them and I think I said "they're okay" he told me he would send me the rest of the pictures soon.

Soon never came. My mother called him later and he said he "lost the pictures."

From meeting him and seeing the pictures he altered of me, I have concluded he is a sick person. Don't work with him. His name again is Tom Boyce of Boyce Photography. If you choose to work with a photographer, ALWAYS sign a contract BEFORE you take any pictures. He promised he would let me sign it AFTER I took them but that never happened either. Always go with someone and always request before you take any pictures that you want a copy of all unaltered and altered pictures just in case his version of altering is creepy.

He recently moved from Wisconsin to Houston, Texas.
Here is his profile link on ONEMODELPLACE

I've been a professional model for nearly half my life. At this advanced point of my career I regret working with Laretta houston Photography as a very poor choice in hindsight.

In May, I hired her for a shoot that was approximately $650. This shoot included makeup, hair, apparel and 4 looks. The shoot was in May and now with August around the corner Laretta Houston Photography refuses to turn over the work she was hired to do.

She disseminated my photos for commercial purposes; which are being used to sell the apparel I'm wearing in the shoot I hired her for. After I paid her and requested my photos she demanded I sign a model release. Remember, I hired her. Of course I politely declined to sign, however; she refused to give me the images until I sign a release that would give her legal cover for actions already done without my permission. It would also give her the right to sell the images indefinitely without my consultation or compensation!

This release would give me little or no room to use these images for my own benefit; which is the reason I hired www.larettahouston.com. I've tried to resolve this, but Laretta has been unrelenting in her demands for rights which I will not relinquish at this point.

Since trying to resolve this privately and professionally, I have had to deal with name calling and unrealistic slander on public forums like facebook.

To all models and future clients, I would seriously suggest you reconsider working with a photographer that is known to be bullish with talent and factually known not turn over the artistic images they are hired to create. I would hate to have what has happen to me to happen to you or anyone else.

I have since sent a complaint to the Better Business Bureau (which was accepted), and had a cease & desist letter sent by certified mail Laretta from my attorney. I plan to send a cease and desist letter to the boutique selling their product with my images I paid for and never received.

Below I have attached a few documents:
1. Breach of contract
2. Screenshot of the images being used commercially without authorization in Atlanta.
3. Model release form that Laretta asked me to sign after the shoot was over and wrapped. This should have been mentioned in negotiations with her. If it had she would not have been hired and she would not have been paid $650.00.

Example 1:
Cease & desist letter sent to Laretta Houston Photgraphy by my legal counsel.

J’Adore Magazine reached out to a few folks in the industry, myself included to relay a sincere word of caution regarding a malicious individual who has been repeatedly misrepresenting the J’Adore Magazine brand and reputation.

This fraud is a young man by the name of Zakee Boyd (see more images below), also known in many circles as “Jesus”– especially among the women he comes in contact with during his weekly escapades at popular nightspots including Dreamz, Pure, Esso’s, Magic City and other popular venues.

After repeated warnings directly from J’Adore’s upper management, Mr. Boyd continues to insist on using our publication for personal gain. Because of his sustained deceit, there is now the urgency to alert the public of this imposter who is benefiting from the hard years of work we have put in to make J’Adore what it is.In the span of the last few months, J’Adore Magazine’s staff has received numerous complaints and reports about his misconduct and misrepresentation. Boyd’s tactics include false representation that he is the CEO, Vice President and/or photographer for J’Adore Magazine and promises businesses and individuals concessions and coverage in the publication in order to gain VIP access, special treatment, perks and other sources of personal gain. Boyd also approaches aspiring models in these venues with false promises of J’Adore exposure, leading to personal visits and mpromptu photo shoots. This, of course, is the most dangerous of all of the scenarios and should be taken very seriously.

To be clear, Zakee Boyd was briefly involved with J’Adore Magazine as a source of promotions for J’Adore. His role with J’Adore was quickly canceled after we received several repeated reports of the aforementioned unscrupulous activities.

Ultimately, Zakee Boyd, under absolutely any circumstances, should not be taken seriously as a member of J’Adore Magazine or party of any other reputable business related to the publication. If the J’Adore staff learns that he continues to gain perks under false pretenses immediate legal action will be the results.

Zakee Boyd's MySpace is http://www.myspace.com/jesuszak
On MySpace Mr. Boyd uses the Alias Jesus aka Zak BFAM Ent

Hey everyone,

MyModelTalk is recession free. Aparently scam artists in Nigeria, Russia, and a few third world countries know this...

Lately the personal messaging system has been sometimes abused by con artists sending messages to Members on MyModelTalk.

Please, guys, be vigilant. Anyone someone asks you to email them your personal information please ask to see VERIFIABLE works or credit that they have done if it isn't obvious.

This is how 80% of identity theft begins. Please don't become a victim. It's not only a aggravating situation but if you are an American citizen, there isn't much you can do to get your credit and identity repaired.

Please...again. Don't send your personal contact information to anyone that requests it without verifying whom they are or exactly what they do. If there is no evidence of thier work then its probably best to walk away.

Of course castings posted by MyModelTalk are totally different. Feel free to email your information to casting posted by us without fear but its a good idea to get into the habit of checking the history of the production you want to work for.

This man who is said to own a production company called SW Productions is into scamming people and gives threats to put you on a blacklist, there is no such thing but be ware if you talk to someone through the email of swproductions@techemail.com that they are not a legit company and will try to get you to do modeling not of your choice.

I thought i was going to be doing a shoot to help him with a project he said he was working on and he asked me to fill out a form and to send it back, i had no due date and i was surely going to get back, as i keep my word if i am going to commit to something, the next day my best friend died and i had not gotten to my computer as i would assume not many people would. It was a mere 3 days that i hadn't responded when he had emailed me back and told me he was going to put my name on a modeling blacklist for California before even finding the reason to my no response. He continued to call my behavior dysfunctional and that i wont be modeling in California for the next 5 years.
Do not be scammed by this blacklist threats, there is no such thing. No agency is going to listen to some ignorant man and not trust their own thoughts of talent.

BEWARE OF THESE PEOPLE and keep pursuing your dreams!!!!

When I first discovered Easy Background Check I thought I'd found a resource that would be great to check when referencing Agencies. After all I do care about all MMT members. But things changed recently, I read a few articles (honestly I never visited the site that much) and I noticed that the site did not seem to offer any tangible proof for any of their accusations. Also I know a MMT member in the Industry that was referenced on Easy Background Check. And just about every bit of that information was either false or very vague...

I actually emailed the member about the article and asked them about. How surprised I was to find that Easy Background Check had promised to remove the article if the member paid $2,500.00.

I don't recommend relying on Easy background check to decide whether a company is legit or not. According to another article I've read on them they do flaming articles and then try to extort the person or company they wrote the article about. To make it worse some factual articles are mixed in with a lot of false ones.

I'd stick to contacting the BBB Better Business Bureau if you have questions on a company's history.

A guy named Louis Mendez posted ads in NewYork and Georgia claiming to be looking for model/actresses for Hip Hop Movie Roles. Upon replying to the ad, he offered me a "role" in the movie that was supposed to be shooting in Brazil. I was to be paid $2500 for the role and the trip was to be all expenses paid by Allstar Models. He told me all I needed to do was get a passport and send them $250 for my workpermit VISA and insurance for my protection incase of any injuries that may or may not occur on set. And the $250 would be returned upon completion of the filming. He returned all of my messages and phone calls before I sent the money. But after I wired him the money, he didn't return any of my phone calls or voicemails. He sent me one short e-mail appoligizing for the delay for every 3 e-mails I sent him asking what was going on. All the way up until a week before the dates of the trip he ignored me and some other girls who were supposed to go and kept assuring us that he was taking care of all the arrangements. Then just stopped all together returning calls and messages. I ended up networking with some of the other models who were supposed to be going and he had scammed us all. He had a yahoo e-mail address and a myspace page. On the myspace page he had pix of models who supposedly worked for Allstar models. This guy had multiple myspace pages and was posing as different female models, posting comments on his own page to make us all think it was legit. This guy is a complete and total sleaze. WATCH OUT for anybody asking you to send them money for ANY reason. I had to learn the hard way. And it's not only the $250 I sent him, it's that plus the $280+ dollars I spent to get an expedited passport and the 10 days I requested off from work to go on the trip. Those hours I wasn't able to get back, so I had to be off with no pay, my money is still messed up from that. I am a single mom with 2 kids and no childsupport so that really hurt. I don't have any money to just throw down the toilet. WATCH OUT FOR THIS GUY!

AP

July 5: Amy Polumbo, Miss New Jersey 2007, addresses the media during a news conference in Asbury Park, N.J.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — <a href="http://javascript:siteSearch('Miss New Jersey');" target="_blank">Miss New Jersey says someone is threatening to make some personal photographs of her public if she does not give up her crown.
But Amy Polumbo is not just Miss New Jersey, she's also a Jersey girl, and says she has no intention of giving in.

"It would certainly be easier for me to simply succumb to these unlawful and immoral threats, and quietly disappear," Polumbo said Thursday at a news conference she called in Asbury Park.

• Click here to view a video report from MyFoxNy.com.

Polumbo, a 22-year-old Howell resident and a senior at <a href="http://javascript:siteSearch('Wagner College');" target="_blank">Wagner College on Staten Island, won the Miss New Jersey competition last month, giving her the right to compete in the next Miss America competition — wherever and whenever it may be held. Her platform: Protecting children from online predators

Polumbo's lawyer, Anthony Caruso, said that starting last week, Polumbo, her family and officials in the Miss New Jersey Education Foundation received packages with pictures of her and the demand that she resign by Friday.

Caruso said the pictures show her with some friends and some may have been photos that she posted years ago on a private Internet site.

Did they reveal skin that a pageant-sanctioned swimsuit would cover up? College students behaving badly, perhaps? Caruso would not say.

"I don't think the photos are that bad," Caruso said. "The people posting this blackmail scheme are trying to make these photos out to be worse than I think they are."

He said he couldn't comment further because more photos could arrive and change everything.

Officials at the <a href="http://javascript:siteSearch('Miss America Organization');" target="_blank">Miss America Organization and the New Jersey affiliate did not immediately return messages Thursday from The Associated Press. But Caruso said the New Jersey competition officials were on board with her trying to fight back.
Caruso said he was planning to contact law enforcement officials to see if any laws were broken.

"It's a real shame because she's a sweet kid," the lawyer said. "She's got a stellar background and she's very talented and it just seems we can never get away from this in our culture."

If Polumbo did step down for some reason, first runner-up Ronica Licciardello would become Miss New Jersey.

Reached by phone at her Mount Laurel home Thursday, Licciardello said she had not heard of the scandal. "I hope this situation is resolved in the best way possible," she said.

Polumbo is not the first pageant winner to have problems stemming from old photographs.

In 2002, Miss North Carolina Rebekah Revels, gave up her crown after an ex-boyfriend told pageant executives he had topless photos of her. The photos never surfaced, but the damage was done. Miss America 1984, Vanessa Williams, was forced to resign when Penthouse published nude photos of her.

Both of those women rebounded. Revels later became Miss United States in the Miss World competition. Williams, of course, has found enduring fame as a pop singer and actress.

Scams, Rip Offs and Bad Business

There is a whole industry that has...

There is a whole industry that has developed to take advantage of those who would like to become models. They are far removed from the world of actual professional modeling. This modeling scam and rip-off industry makes its money by alluding to or promising great careers in modeling, but first you have to pay them up front. Of course your modeling career never comes about and your money is long gone. These enterprises prey upon your hopes and dreams of becoming a star and they are betting on your lack of knowledge about how the modeling industry really works. This leach industry seems to be getting bigger everyday.
These enterprises fall into three categories: the scam, the rip-off, and those that just run bad businesses. All will take your money and give little or nothing in return.
The scam operation conducts fraudulent and illegal activities. This type of enterprise has no intention of delivering on what it promises. They make big promises and guarantees and usually ask for a substantial sum of money up front, and then they vanish in the night.
The rip-off is a big category, and it's not illegal. Companies operating rip-off schemes make vague promises or they tout one or two models (out of thousands whose money they've taken) that actually succeeded in a career. They will work with anyone who pays money up front, and they tell everyone they have some type of talent, whether or not they really do. The rip-off companies can include modeling agencies that charge up front for signing fees and photo shoots, or that require you take their class before they will work with you. Also in this category are some of the modeling conventions, searches, and competitions. Many virtual modeling sites are springing up all over the web. New rip-off enterprises are starting up every day.
The bad business category includes enterprises that are trying to conduct a legitimate business, but just don't know what they are doing. They do not have the essential knowledge of the industry they need or they may be poorly located. These businesses might include someone who sets up a modeling agency in a too-small market area, or a photographer offering to shoot professional modeling portfolios but does not have the skill level to carry it off, or it might be a modeling school that should really be called a finishing school (offering classes in image enhancement, or using outdated teaching materials). I think these businesses mean well but they still cost money for classes or photos that are ultimately useless.

If your goal is to become a professional model, remember that all of the scams, rip-offs, and bad businesses that promise to take you to that goal are, in fact, barriers to it. Watch for the warning signs.

Warning Signs

Warning signs of a scam, or a less than legitimate, or a poorly run agency. If you find any of these warning signs, it does not necessarily mean the business is a scam operation but be sure to ask a lot of questions, and be sure the business gives good answers. Always check references! New York City is the exception to many of these warning signs.
1) Newspaper classified ads or display ads looking for any kind of model or talent (other than nude glamour modeling, i.e. models for the adult entertainment industry). Reputable modeling agencies receive plenty of would-be model inquiries so they don't need to advertise for models. If they are short of talent they will send their scouts out to public places to look for potential talent.
2) Pictures of famous New York supermodels on the walls of their offices, or these models' comp cards on a wall rack. Top New York fashion models do not need a modeling agency in small town USA.
3) Up-front fees. These could be signing fees, new account fees, evaluation fees, etc. If an agency has to charge money at the front end it means that there is not enough money at the back end. It also means that the agency probably does not have enough modeling work to be able to survive on commissions, and therefore, not enough work for a model to survive on either.
4) "We are interested in you but you need to test shoot with our photographer and it's going to cost you." Legitimate agencies will provide you with a list of photographers that you may go to on your own. Many will have a place by the front door for photographers' business cards that you can take on your way out. You should be free to go to any photographer you choose. If the agency tells you that you must use their photographer, watch out. A twist on this theme is when the agency provides the photo session at no charge, then charges you a high fee(example, $700) for a "professional" makeup artist. You will need photos at some point but you should be free to shop around and find your own photographer and makeup artist.
5) "We are interested in you but you need to go through our classes first and it is going to cost you." Again money at the front end means not enough modeling work at the back end. A combination school/modeling agency has a conflict of interest. For example, SAG (Screen Actors Guild) member agencies cannot offer both.
6) "We guarantee you work." Modeling agencies are not employers. They represent you and try to get work for you. Most of the time they don't know for sure what type of job will come in or what 'look' may be needed, thus there is no way a legitimate agency can guarantee you work. The best they can do is to give you an idea of their track record on placements. But remember that past performance is no guarantee of future performance.
7) "As it says in our ad in the local newspaper we guarantee you work, just like the famous models on our walls, just as soon as you go through our modeling classes, shoot with our photographer, and pay our agency fees." RUN, do not walk, to the nearest exit.

A Modeling Scam
One scam operation targeted a small town in Oregon. A Los Angeles company looking for models for TV commercials ran ads in the local newspaper. Applicants were told to send in some personal information and a couple of snapshots. After that the company would contact the applicants and let them know whether or not they had the look that was needed. Then the would-be models were signed up for a commercial that paid big bucks and told that a test shoot was needed before shooting the actual commercial. Contracts, airline vouchers, and lots of official looking paperwork were sent to the would-be models. The company would pay all the expenses except for the makeup artist, for which they required $500 up front. Having a contract in hand and not understanding how the modeling industry worked, the small-town would-be models sent in their $500. Once the checks were cashed, the scam company vanished. The commercial, contracts, airline vouchers, and guarantees were all bogus. It is easy to con someone who is not educated about the industry. As the song says, "The lure of easy money has a very strong appeal."

The original article is posted here. Just be wary of traveling to these countries on any type of buisness...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19190524/

-Mykkal

Annual list cites 16 as top offenders, four more than in 2006

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Tuesday added seven nations, including several key U.S. allies in the Middle East, to its human trafficking blacklist for failing to halt what it called the scourge of "modern-day slavery."

Countries on the list are subject to possible sanctions for not doing enough to stop the yearly flow of some 800,000 people, 80 percent of them female and more than half of them children, across international borders for the sex trade and other forms of forced and indentured labor.

Among U.S. friends getting a failing grade were Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, which along with Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Malaysia joined for the first time perennial offenders like Myanmar (Burma), Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria in the State Department's annual "Trafficking in Persons Report."

Sixteen states in all — four more than in 2006 — were given so-called "Tier 3" status in the 236-page survey of global efforts to combat trafficking in people, many of whom are seeking to escape poverty in Eastern Europe, South and Southeast Asia and are sold into the commercial sex trade, manual labor or mistreated as domestics.
Despite the additions, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said "more and more countries are coming to see human trafficking for what it is — a modern-day form of slavery that devastates families and communities around the world."

"We hope this report encourages responsible nations across the globe to stand together, to speak with one voice and to say that freedom and security are nonnegotiable demands of human dignity, and to say ... 'No one is fit to be a master and no one deserves to be a slave,'" she told reporters.

Countries with "Tier 3" ranking "do not fully comply with the minimum standards (to fight trafficking) and are not making significant efforts to do so," which makes them eligible for U.S. economic sanctions.

Some improvements

Three countries that had been placed on "Tier 3" in 2006 — Belize, Laos and Zimbabwe — were promoted to "Tier 2" this year for improving their records, according to the report. "Tier 2" countries are those that do not fully comply with minimum standards but are making significant efforts to do so.

The recognition is rare U.S. praise for Zimbabwe, long singled out by Washington for harsh criticism on its overall human rights record, a point noted by Rice's pointman on the trafficking issue, Mark Lagon.

"Our relationship with the government is in a very critical state on other grounds but the facts are that through our leveraging and through our prodding, Zimbabwe has actually taken some tangible steps," he said.

Still, such lobbying has had far from a universal effect.

The seven newcomers to "Tier 3" were all demoted from "Tier 2 watchlist" status, which now covers 32 countries, including India, Mexico and Russia, that have been cited for poor anti-trafficking records for numerous consecutive years.

"The 'Tier 2 watchlist' is not supposed to become a parking lot for governments lacking the will or interest to stop exploitation and enslavement on their soil," Lagon said, describing India as "the world's largest democracy (with) the world's largest problem."
Most of this year's additions to "Tier 3" are Muslim or predominantly Muslim nations, many of which have the means to enforce foreign workers' rights and anti-trafficking laws.

"It is especially disappointing that so many wealthy countries in the Near East ... are on 'Tier 3'," Lagon said.

Bahrain, the Persian Gulf home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, was cited for failing to crack down on human traffickers who are bringing in men, women and children for forced labor or commercial sex work, the report says.

"Bahrain made no discernible progress in preventing trafficking this year," it said, noting that laws aimed at protecting foreign workers, largely from South and Southeast Asia, are not enforced and that authorities are not seriously investigating alleged widespread abuse.

Oil-rich Kuwait "made modest progress in preventing trafficking in persons this year," the report said, but added that "Kuwaiti efforts to improve its protection of victims of human trafficking had little effect."

Oman was cited for not applying and enforcing existing laws against human trafficking as well failing to distribute pamphlets aimed at educating foreign workers about their rights, it said.

Qatar, long accused by the United States of ignoring the plight of child camel jockeys, was demoted to "Tier 3" for not enacting legislation to outlaw all forms of human trafficking and for producing only two convictions among numerous cases of alleged abuse of domestic servants, according to the report.

The complete list of "Tier 3" countries in this year's report is: Algeria, Bahrain, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia, Myanmar, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan and Venezuela are regularly accused by Washington of failing to protect human rights and are often cited in State Department reports for their lack of respect for press and religious freedoms.
But Malaysia made its first appearance on "Tier 3" for its failure to protect and identify victims of trafficking, many of them Indonesian domestics.

"The Malaysian government needs to demonstrate stronger political will to tackle Malaysia's significant forced labor and sex trafficking problems," the report said.

Most models with an Internet presence will eventually be approached or see casting notices from “agencies” which make magnificent claims. Once in a long while it will be from a real, substantial agency with a legitimate client base. Much more often it will seem to be from such an agency, but will really be from a scammer.

These things can be hard for inexperienced models to spot. They are good at salesmanship and creating the appearance of being real, vibrant, important players in the modeling and talent market. Still, to a knowledgeable observer, these scams are easy to spot. Here is a tutorial:

There are exceptions to some of the rules below – but the exceptions are unusual, and if there is a consistent pattern of an “agency” with “exceptional” castings, the burden of proof needs to be on the agency. The industry doesn’t work like that.

March 21, 2007 -- FALLEN fashion designer Anand Jon - who is being held on $1.3 million bail in a Los Angeles jail on multiple charges of sexual assault - cultivated his celebrity image by always going out with an entourage and showing people his press clippings.

According to sources who spent time with Jon over the past few years, "He runs his life like a cult. He has four people following him around at all times, including a publicist, a photographer, and his assistant, who is his sister."

The source added that before Jon was arrested March 13 on 20 counts of assault - including two counts of rape - "he always had young girls around. They may have been over 18, but they didn't look it."

One of Jon's former publicists, Chris Hulbert, who long ago distanced himself from the accused assailant, told Page Six that a few years ago the down-and-out designer advanced on Hulbert's 19-year-old date at a Manhattan club.

"He put his hand around her neck and said 'You have a very comfortable neck, would you like to have sex with me?' She was really creeped out."

Page Six's source said Jon would lure girls with promises of fame, world travel and glamour. "He would carry around a press book with all his clippings and show it to people at parties," said one former friend.

"He shows these girls books about himself. and they . . . get wrapped up in his smoke and mirrors. He reels girls . . . into situations by asking them to come along with him and his crew."

Jon has dressed celebrities like Paris Hilton, Paula Abdul and Michelle Rodriguez, and would frequent celeb-filled parties in the Hamptons as well as downtown clubs.
"He will tell girls, 'I can take you places,' and the girls see the photographers following him around, and they would believe him because he was friends with Paris. But they were totally duped."
Jon's attorney, Ronald Richards, told Page Six, "All up-and-coming celebrities try to promote themselves. It's not inconsistent with other young up-and-coming celebs to self-promote."

If You've Got The Look, Look Out! Avoiding Modeling Scams

What could be more flattering? Someone approaches you at the mall and says, "You could be a model. You've got the 'look' we're after. Here's my card. Give me a call to set up an appointment." People have always said you're good looking. Now, visions of glamour, travel and money flash before your eyes.
It's true that some successful models have been discovered in everyday places like malls, boutiques, clubs, and airports. But the vast majority of would-be models knock on door after agency door before work comes their way.
It's All an Act

If and when you make that follow-up appointment, you'll probably find yourself in an office filled with lots of other model and actor hopefuls. Then the spiel starts. What you thought was a job interview with a talent agency turns into a high-pressure sales pitch for modeling or acting classes, or for "screen tests" or "photo shoots" that can range in price from several hundred to several thousand dollars.
Man, woman, or child — it makes no difference to bogus model and talent scouts. Often, these scouts are after one thing — your money — and will say just about anything to get it. But what they say isn't always what they mean.

What They Say vs. What They Mean

Unscrupulous model and talent scouts have their acts down pat. Listen carefully to read between their lines.

"We're scouting for people with your 'look' to model and act."

I need to sign up as many people as possible. My commission depends on it.

"Your deposit is totally refundable."

Your deposit is refundable only if you meet very strict refund conditions.

"You must be specially selected for our program. Our talent experts will carefully evaluate your chances at success in the field and will only accept a few people into our program."

We take almost everyone.

"There's a guaranteed refund if you're not accepted into the program."

Everyone's accepted into the program. Forget the refund.

"You can't afford our fees? No problem. You can work them off with the high-paying jobs we'll get you."

We demand payment, whether or not you get work.

"Commissions from our clients are our major source of income."

Our income comes from the fees we charge you.

Pose-itioning Yourself

To break into the business, you — the talent — need professional photos. There are two types of standard photographs — a "head shot" and a "composite card."

The typical marketing tool for an actor, experienced or not, the head shot usually is an 8" x 10" black and white photo of the face, with your resume printed on the back.

A "comp card," the typical marketing tool for the experienced model or the wannabe, usually features several shots on the same sheet, showing off the talent in different attire or settings.

Agencies and schools offer separate and distinct services. Make sure you know the difference.

Modeling (or talent) agencies secure employment for experienced models and actors. Some agents require that you sign up exclusively with them; others may allow you to register with them as well as with other agencies in town.

Modeling and acting schools claim to provide instruction — for a fee — in poise, posture, diction, skin care, make-up application, the proper walk, and more. Modeling schools do not necessarily act as agents or find work for you — after you take their classes, you may be on your own.

Talent Tips:

Steer clear of modeling companies that require you to use a specific photographer. Compare fees and the work quality of several photographers.

Be suspicious if a company requires an up-front fee to serve as your agent.

Be cautious if the school has a special referral relationship with a specific modeling agency. The two could be splitting your fees, or the agency may not be suited to your needs.

Avoiding a Model Rip-Off

Ask yourself, "why me?" Don't let your emotions — and the company's flattery — take control. Think carefully and critically about how you were approached: if it was in a crowded mall, think how many others also may have been approached.

Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. Never sign a document without reading and understanding it first. In fact, ask for a blank copy of the contract to take home and review with someone you trust. If the company refuses, walk away.

Be leery of companies that only accept payment in cash or by money order. Read it as a strong signal that the company is more interested in your money than your career.

Be wary of claims about high salaries. Successful models in small markets can earn $75 to $150 an hour, but the work is irregular.

Ask for the names, addresses and phone numbers of models and actors who have secured successful work — recently — based on the company's training.

Check out client claims. If an agency says it has placed models and actors in specific jobs, contact the companies to verify that they've hired models and actors from the agency.

Be skeptical of local companies claiming to be the "biggest" agency or a "major player" in the industry, especially if you live in a smaller city or town.

Realize that different parts of the country have different needs. For example, New York is recognized for fashion modeling; the Washington/Baltimore area is known for industrial or training films.

Ask if the company/school is licensed or bonded, if that's required by your state. Verify this information with the appropriate authorities, such as your local consumer protection agency or state Attorney General. Make sure the license is current.

Ask your local Better Business Bureau, consumer protection agency and state Attorney General if there are any unresolved consumer complaints on file about the company.

Get everything in writing, including any promises that have been made orally.

Keep copies of all important papers, such as your contract and company literature, in a safe place.

*Editor’s Note:** We know...

Scam Alert Safety Alert: Sex Slave Ring Operators Posting Casting Call Ads on Online Modeling and Talent Agency Websites
Editor’s Note: We know this story is hard to believe, but it is true. After we saw this report on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, we checked out the story and verified the facts. Donny Deutsch has an excellent reputation, and Kristin Stinar, the reporter who appeared on the show, is an award winning investigative reporter with excellent credentials. The Donny Deutsch show has covered other stories about the sex slave trade as well.

By Randi Reed

KSTP Investigative Reporter Kristin Stinar was on CNBC’s The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch last week to tell about a sex slave ring that posted fake casting call ads on an online modeling and talent agency website. Appearing with her on the show was an actress named Jennifer who, thanks to Stinar’s investigation, discovered she may have foiled a potential kidnapping attempt by bringing a male “bodyguard” with her to the “audition” site. Here’s what happened:

The actress, who lived in the Midwest, postedher photo and resume on a paid modelingand talent agency website and answered what looked like a legitimate casting ad for New Line Cinema. She was asked to come to New York for an audition.

She flew to New York at her own expense for the audition. Feeling uneasy about going to an audition alone in an unfamiliar city, she asked a male employee from her hotel to accompany her to check out the site in advance.

When they arrived at the audition address, it turned out to be a “real estate office” in an industrial area, and the two people there said they didn’t know anything about any auditions.

KSTP reporter Kristin Stinar investigated and found out the ad was placed by a person who posed as someone from New Line Cinema, and that the imposter worked for a “family business” that deals in white slavery. Stinar said she spoke to this person herself, and that the person admitted to using online modeling and talent agencies to lure young women to an “audition” site, where they’re kidnapped, stripped of their identification, and shipped overseas to work in the sex slave trade.

Stinar and the actress think it’s possible that someone may have been watching the parking lot and changed their mind about kidnapping the actress when they saw her arrive at the “audition” site with a male companion.

Stinar also found an actress in Connecticut who says she too was lured to New York to an audition at that same address. She too, wisely brought someone with her to check out the site in advance.

We’re glad the actresses followed their instincts and brought along someone to the “audition.” You should, too.

You are going to have to start reading it from the bottom. Of course, it begins with a guy by the name of Garry Patterson. He claims that he wants to offer me a ushering model job. I've never heard of such a job title. Anyways, everytime I ask him for an address and phone no. for his business, he ignores me and keeps asking me to accept his offer. The fishy thing that caught my eye, was that he was asking for my Bank name but not my account no. He even called me Jessica instead of Erica. What a hoot! A red flag still went up in my head...anyways I think his offer is a scam. Tell me what you think.
