I am an LA-based visual & performance artist. I was recently invited to participate in Performa 09 by staging a theatrical performance at X-Initiative in New York City. Performa is a biennial dedicated to the presentation of contemporary performance by international visual artists at more than 70 venues accross New York City (
www.performa-arts.org). X is a one year long arts initiative housed in Chelsea in the same building where Dia New York used to be. They "collaborate with artists to reach across traditional boundaries to form a consortium interested in responding quickly to major shifts currently impacting culture" (
www.x-initiative.org).
On November 11th & 12th I will re-stage “Everything, Nothing, Something, Always (Walla!)” which is a time based installation that takes the form of a one act live theatrical play that loops uninterrupted for three hours and varies slightly with each repetition. The play simultaneously functions as a performative “sculpture” in the center of the exhibition space, visible from all angles. Seating is not provided for viewers, thus instigating constant physical displacement. The medium of theater has been adopted in an exhibition context in order to stage a conversation-cum-argument between five characters who represent various aspects of the artist’s psyche. Through spoken language and movement, these representations of the complex self turn the artistic process inside out for the viewer, thus opening it up for examination. The characters on stage are faced with 10 seated actors who play a (very reactionary) artificial audience. The actual audience is therefore encouraged to question their role in the space: they watch not only the play, but also another audience watching a play, all the while looking accross the gallery and through the play at each other.
I am looking for a musican to play a song that was composed especially for this piece. The song would be repeated 9 or 10 times each night and accompanied by a 14 person singing chorus. Rehearsals will be two nights a week between now and November 12th.
Performa is vastly popular in the world of visual and performing arts. Artists, directors, galleries, museums, collectors, curators, writers, critics, from all over the world will be present for the show. Every participating performer will receive professional documentation (both stills & video) for their reels as well as a tiny stipend (around $100).
Please email Emily if you are interested in auditioning. Thanks.
