Hair show modeling - advice?
actingfamily actingfamily is offline 02-15-2007, 01:53 PM

Just got a call from our agent asking if my 15 yr old dd wants to audition as a hair show model for the Paul Mitchell hair show. She has lovely, thick long hair. I was told she would have to be open to whatever they might want to do to her hair.

Has anyone here done hair shows? How radical can they get with cutting, color, etc.? Do you have any say or control over what is done? I wouldn't mind seeing her get a slightly different style or a mild color change or highlights but wouldn't want anything radical.

Plus, we JUST had new headshots done of her so would end up losing any money made if we had to have new hs taken if her look changed greatly.
Any advice? I need to get back to our agent about it. Thanks!

The models hired generally have to be pretty open to whatever changes the stylist wants. When you go to the go-see, you can express your concerns as to your limitations, but you still need to be cautious if you have headshots and such already - because once you change drastically, you'll have to reshoot and reprint. As someone else here mentioned, the more you're willing to let them take control, the better chance you have of booking. Weigh out the cost of new photos vs. the $75 modeling fee.

Yes....exactly my thoughts about the cost of new headshots vs the experience. I haven't had them printed yet but did pay for the photographer, makeup artist and slight retouching so $75 wouldn't cover it if they want to change her look drastically. Then we would probably pass on it.

So what exactly do models do at a hair show? From the pics posted, it looks like they are onstage while getting a style/color, etc. Other photos I have seen look more like a runway event after the syles are done.

At most hair shows (which are generally in conjunction with a convention for hair stylist related products), there are four different areas that models may be hired for.

The first are the models that they use to demonstrate cut and style (and/or coloring) techniques with. This is done all day, generally, throughout the show and girls are shuffled in one after another. This can be fun for someone starting out and can produce some cool new looks for the girls. At the last one I attended, there was one guy cutting like he was Edward Sissorhands. It was a sight to see and very entertaining (but I'd never let any of my girls go through that because of the drastic changes and how it would affect them on their regular print jobs).

In fact, this is the guy that was just slashing away like Johnny Depp (Sissorhands)

The second are models used for runway shows. These are usually pure entertainment and to catch the audience attention. Sometimes they consist of girls who've been through number one, above. These are pretty much as you'd expect with the models walking the runway, the music blaring, and often an announcer:

Then there are what I'd refer to as "booth girls." This is generally where I don't mind having girls placed - and it pays very well, usually. We had several girls hired by Jessica Simpson for her new hair-extensions line... and the models left with over $1000 in extensions and pieces to keep (once they wear them, they can't be resold, etc.). Our girls loved this because they have wonderful hair pieces now to use for shoots, jobs, etc. Photo is two of our girls who worked for Jessica Simpson at the last show in Texas. (THESE ARE HAIR EXTENSIONS THE GIRLS ARE WEARING)

Finally, there are pre-show promotionals... for instance, the one below that is one of our girls on FOX TV. Marc Anthony was in town for a show and hired her for a short demo on the morning news.

The shows are actually a lot of fun to attend. Lots going on, great products, demonstrations, and just a really cool feel about them.

Mykal,

Turns out this is for the Bonner Brothers show after all but this model call is specifically for Paul Mitchell products booth and stage. Are you planning to attend this? If so pm me with the details and maybe my dd and I can introduce ourselves to you.

AustinModelsandTalent,

Thanks for all the great information and photos. Yikes - that guy in the cape looks scary - don't think I'd want him cutting my hair or my dd's!

Actually just got off the phone with the model coordinator and she patiently answered all my questions and sounded like they would work within what we are willing to do. Agent likewise said not to make any radical changes and to be sure that's communicated up front clearly to the hair artist. Also said it was fine to not accept the job if they wouldn't stay within our limits.

Sounds like it would be a combination of having the hair done onstage, then getting in wardrobe for a stage walk and possibly standing at the booth so people could see the finished product....maybe even handing out some samples. We've done lots of other industry work but never a hair show so this should be a fun adventure.

Thanks all for the info and advice!
